What We Stand For

The below is what we campaigned on in 2013.  We are keeping it up for now so you can assess how we are going at doing what we said we would!

Roskill is the place we call home, the place we love. We have it all here - stunning natural features such as our foreshore and maunga, great local schools and businesses, diverse and creative communities, and a proud history of giving people from all walks of life a fair go.

Our total focus is on making sure that Roskill has a strong voice. We believe that our community should be treated fairly, and that our issues should be heard by the decision makers. We are not afraid to roll our sleeves up, and to make some noise, to ensure that Roskill's voice is heard.

Over the last three years we have established a track record of standing up for Mt Roskill and having a strong set of community-grounded values. We believe in fairness for everyone, no matter what their station in life. We have fought for decisions to be made here in Roskill, not at the Town Hall. We have advanced important initiatives to protect our environment and heritage. And we have stepped forward to work with and support our valued local community groups.

In 2013 we are focussed on:

Winning a fair share for Roskill
Our community has been overlooked for many years and as a result of that neglect, Roskill receives some of the lowest per-capita funding of any community in Auckland. Roskill deserves to be treated fairly.
Our campaign focus is on securing a fair share for Mt Roskill with a focus on the things that matter to local people - better footpaths, roads, and parks, equitable community funding, and good quality local facilities - including Fairness for Wesley, one of our most poorly served areas.

Burying the Pylons
The invasive high voltage power pylons that run through our neighbourhoods and the ecologically Manukau Foreshore are a blight on our community.  It simply wouldn't be tolerated in suburbs along the Waitemata Harbour, so why should it happen here?
There is a solution. Transpower will pay out over $500 million in dividends to government over the next three years. A portion of that would underground all of the pylons. We are campaigning with local MP Phil Goff to 'Bury the Pylons' and launched our efforts in July with a well attended public meeting.  Click here to go to the online petition (please only sign the paper version OR the online one, not both).  Click here for all our news updates about this to date.

Protecting our Environment and Restoring our Cones
We treasure our local environment. Roskill is home to the stunning Manukau Foreshore, several major urban streams, and of course two volcanic maunga - Puketapapa/Mt Roskill and Te Tatua-a-Riukiuta/Big King. We need to protect and enhance these important natural features so that they can be enjoyed now and in the future. In particular, after many years of neglect, we say that it is time to restore our cones.  To that end, as part of our Vision For Three Kings policy, we are campaigning to Restore Big King.

Reducing harm with fewer bottle shops and pokies
We have a vision for a Mt Roskill that is safer and healthier for individuals and their families. To achieve this we have to tackle the causes of harm in our community. Roskill Community Voice takes a principled stand against the spread of off-license liquor outlets and pokie machines in our community and will act to bring numbers down. To keep our children healthy we have taken the lead in making our local playgrounds smokefree and will build on this work. We are also focussed on community safety, tackling the root causes of crime by promoting jobs and a Living Wage, and also acting to stamp out graffiti and provide safer, better lit public spaces.

Detailed policy across a range of areas will be released as the campaign progresses and you can find it here.
